Ball bearings are the most widely used type of rolling bearing. They carry radial loads and moderate axial loads in both directions, run with low friction and reach high speeds. You will find them in electric motors, fans, pumps, gearboxes — in practically every machine with a fast-turning shaft under moderate load.
The same seat size comes in several designs, and it is the design that decides service life in a given application. Open bearings run in an oil bath or on central lubrication. The 2Z version with shields does not touch the inner ring, so it adds no friction and suits high speeds. Contact seals (2RSR) keep out dust and moisture at the cost of slightly higher drag.
What to look at when selecting
- Load mainly radial — if axial load dominates, use an angular contact or tapered roller bearing.
- Operating environment: dust and moisture call for contact seals (2RSR); a clean hall with high speed calls for shields (2Z).
- Temperature above 70 °C or a tight shaft fit — choose increased clearance C3 instead of normal CN.
- A polyamide cage (TVH) damps vibration and is lighter; a pressed steel cage takes higher temperatures.
- For continuous duty check the limiting speed on the datasheet — it is given separately for grease and oil.
Common questions
- What is the difference between 2Z and 2RSR?
- 2Z means shields on both sides — they do not touch the inner ring, so they add no friction and allow higher speeds, but they only stop coarser dust. 2RSR means contact seals: they keep out fine dust and moisture, at the cost of higher drag and a lower limiting speed.
- When should I choose C3 clearance instead of normal?
- Use C3 when the bearing runs at elevated temperature, when the inner ring is pressed tightly onto the shaft, or when the outer ring sits tightly in the housing. In each case the operating clearance shrinks during work and normal CN could reach zero, which ends in seizure.
