Linear guides turn rotation into precise linear motion with minimal friction. The carriage rolls along the rail on rolling elements recirculating in a closed loop, so it carries loads from every direction and moments too, not just force along the axis. This is the backbone of CNC machine tools, assembly automation, plotters and manipulator axes.
Service life depends on three things: sizing to load and moment, carriage preload, and protection from chips and coolant. Contamination kills a guide faster than overload — a single chip dragged under the seal scores the raceway along the whole stroke.
What to look at when selecting
- Calculate moments, not just force: tool overhang turns a small load into a large moment on the carriage.
- Preload: higher gives stiffness and accuracy, lower gives easier motion and longer life under vibration.
- The accuracy class must match the machine; higher than needed is wasted money.
- Covers and wipers in chip-laden environments; with coolant add front seals as well.
- Plan re-lubrication — most failures follow a skipped service, not an overload.
Common questions
- Can the carriage be replaced while keeping the rail?
- Yes, if the rail is neither worn nor chipped and the carriage comes from the same series, size and preload class. A new carriage on a worn rail will however copy its geometry and lose accuracy quickly — with a visible raceway track, replace the set.
- Which preload should I choose?
- For machining, where stiffness and accuracy matter — higher. For transport, feeding and axes with vibration — lower or zero, because preload raises friction and accelerates wear under impacts.
